"Diamond Life" (File photos) The Blasters brings us "Hard Line, solid rock n' roll with a variety of musical forms David Hersrud The album's centerpiece is John Cougar Mellencamp's "Colored Lights," a great "drivln'-in-your-Chevy-with-the-radio-blasting" type of tune that is indicative of the "roots-soaked" rock roll the Blasters have been playing for years. It isn't the kind of tune that you'll go crazy over the first time you hear it. but the more it's played the better it gets.

Which sort of sums up the Blasters themselves. "Van-Zant" (Geffcn Records). It would be easy to dismiss Van-Zant as just another metalpop band of the LoverboyNight Ranger school. However, that wouldn't be fair and it certainly wouldn't be accurate. Like .38 Special, the Van-Zent sound can trace its roots to the Southern rock roll of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers and the Atlanta Rhythm Section.

It's to be expected. Lead singer Johnny Van-Zant is the younger brother of the late Ronnie Van-Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Donnie Van-Zant of .38 Special. You'd expect a certain family resemblance and it can be detected, though little brother Johnny doesn't have the pipes of Ronnie or Donnie. What Johnny Van-Zant does have is a sense of direction and it's very apparent from the first cut of this album to the last. Van-Zant, as a band, has been around tor awhile, although their three previous efforts hardly prepare you for the polished sound of this record.

The music is sharp and to the point, with little wasted effort. As an ensemble it's obvious that the group works well together, though the wall of sound that producer Rodney Mills has created makes the band sound a bit too slick at times. Still, you have to be impressed by Van-Zant. They've got the potential to be a major act, and besides, there are enough hits here to keep this album on the charts for quite awhile. "Diamond Life," Sade (Portrait Records) Sade (pronounced Sahr-day) is currently one of England's hottest new acts, which considering the state of British pop music, isn't saying too much.

These days the English seem enamored with musical schlock like "Frankie Goes To Hollywood," big bandtechno ripoffs like Bronski Beat or the soul-less Motown flights of Wham. Sade, while not exactly a saving grace, is good enough to warrant much of the massive hype that preceded the release of this, her first album. Musically Sade is hardly what you'd call adventurous. Hers is basically a popjazz product with Steely Dan overtones, and while her voice is limited in its range, she makes the most of it. What distinguishes Sade is not the form, but the substance of her music.

It's light and airy and at times reminiscent of Roberta Flack's more pop-oriented songs. Granted she treads a thin line at times (her rendition of Tim-my Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together" is pure filler) but overall this is a most impressive debut. Let's just hope Sade isn't a one-album wonder. Good music is hard to find. Random notes Arena-style rock 'n' roll returns to the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Wednesday, April 24 when REO Speedwagon and Cheap Trick come to town.

It should be quite a concert as both bands are roadshow veterans from way back. And, yes. KKLS-FM and AM are promoting this one. 5 'There's No Way" Alabama (RCA) 6 "Don't Can It Love" Dolly Parton (RCA! 7. "The Cowboy Rides Away" George strait (MC Sounds '85 We're about 100 days into the New Year, and while I'm still a bit skeptical, the musical prognosis for 1985 appears to be getting a little better.

There hasn't been a whole lot of good new music from major artists. What few cuts I've heard off the new Tom Petty album sound good, and Kenny Loggins' latest is supposed to be outstanding. However, they appear to be exceptions rather than the rule. The Firm, Alan Parsons' Project. Little River Band forget it.

So far what music I have heard has been the product of new artists or groups that don't have much mass appeal, at least not yet. For "Hard Line," The Blasters (SlashWarner Brothers) Of all the new albums released during "Somebody Should Leave" Reoa (MCAI Bound" Earl Thomas Coniey (fi the past six months, three of the best have come from artists and groups that could truly be called practitioners of American music. First there was the Tex-Mex rock roll of Los Lobos Will The Wolf the long-awaited return of John Fogerty and now the latest from the Blasters. "Hard Line" is a superb rock 'n' roll album, though, and like John Fogerty and Los Lobos it embraces a variety of musical forms. They range from the Cajun-rock of "Hey Girl" to the countrified "Help You Dream." Along the way there's a little gospel, a swamp-rock creation that sounds like it came out of Fogerty's Creedence Clearwater heyday, and enough solid rock 'n' roll to please even the most discerning tastes.

The "Hydra" LP one year later featured "99" while 1981's "Turn Back" album barely cracked the charts.

"Toto IV" spawned three major singles "Africa," "Rosanna" "I Won't Hold You Back." "Isolation," a title chosen for the band's long absence, so far has produced the hits "Holyanna," "Stranger in Town" and "How Does It Feel." "People say, 'I don't hear a 'Rosanna' or an 'Africa' on this Well, you only hear them on 'Toto Jeff Porcaro said. "The pressure to get this album as good as 'Toto that didn't exist. That never has with us." The new Toto honed its current act in nine sold-out shows in Japan from Feb. 25-March 8 before embarking on its U.S. tour here March 19 at Arizona State University.

"Japan was kind of a test market," Frederiksen said. 'Isolation' had already gone double platinum over there. The fans stood from the first note to the end of the double encore." "The direction of this band is more focused, more pointed now," Paich said. "We've always wanted to be an entertaining band instead of a music band." Franklin, George Benson, David Gilmour. Donna Summer, Billy Preston, the Tubes and The Brothers Johnson.

Toto also wrote the soundtrack to the movie "Dune" and the boxing theme "Moodido" for Columbia Records' "The Official Music of the XXIII Olympiad Los Angeles, 1984." "This is the original faceless band," said Mike Porcaro, 29. "Everybody in this band has probably done 500 albums in their careers. We're double-scale studio musicians. You get $300 for a three-hour session. You don't get royalties." "People get impressed with a salary like that $100 an hour.

They go, 'Wow, what a lucrative business you're There's no mega-millionaires here," said Steve Porcaro, 27. "Session work is not a steady thing at all. You do eight of them in one week and then go three months without any. That's the way it really is." Toto started taking shape when "Paich, Jeff and I had a band in junior high school," Mike Porcaro said. "Lukather and my brother Steve had a band right after us and they even kept the same name." Lukather said they were "the oldest high school garage band" in Los Angeles.

The two bands merged in 1976 and Toto took its name from the dog in the movie, "Wizard of Oz." Rain or Shine? Page 2 of the Rapid City Journal gives you the National Weather Service forecast. WW treRapidCityJournal Walter Berry TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Toto. the Grammy Award-winning rock band, is trying to shed its faceless image and has embarked on its first U.S. tour in three years.

"It's kind of like we're starting all over again." says guitarist Steve Lukather. The group, which won six Grammys in 1983 for its "Toto IV" album, was on a 50-city "Isolation" tour with a new lead singer, Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen. "Isolation" is Toto's first LP in two years. Former frontman Bobby Kimball and bassist David Hungate left the group last year over "personal differences and reality differences." said percussionist Jeff Porcaro, 31. "David just wasn't into show biz.

His priorities changed. Same thing with Kimball." Toto took a 28-month hiatus in October 1982 following a show at London's Hammersmith Odeon. "We had to regroup and see what we wanted to do. That's why it took so long in between albums," said Lukather. "We were looking for a sex God, someone little girls could throw their underwear at.

A good frontman, that's something we never really had. Our live gigs never came up to our records. Now I think it does. The best is yet to come." The 33-year-old Frederiksen, formerly of the heavy-metal bands "Trillion" and "Le Roux," was suggested to Porcaro by Toto's tour manager, Chris Littleton. "He fits in like a glove," said bassist Mike Porcaro, one of three brothers in the band.

"Fergie's a good looking blond guy who's a gymnast and got a great physique. If Fergie went out there in a G-string, we'd be playing stadiums now. He knows how to work a crowd. Bobby was timid on stage. We're five times the band live now." "We've finally found our chemistry for touring," keyboardist Steve Porcaro said.

"It's how we've always pictured it being. All the pieces are there now." "This is the real Toto," said keyboard player and vocalist David Paich, 30.
