Baseball Insider, C7 More cycle action, C8 Salter fires 67, C8 C6 SATURDAY August 10, 1991 Rapid City Journal Sports White Sox trip bumbling Birds Daly powers to PGA lead Rookie turns in a 67 By The Associated Press BALTIMORE Tim Raines had By Bob Green AP Golf Writer PGA leaderboard John Daly 69-67-136 Bruce Lietzke 68-69137 Kenny Knox 67-71-138 NickFaldo 70-69-139 Craig Stadler 68-71 -1 39 lanWoosnam 67-72139 ARM EL, Ind. That brute of a bully called Crooked Stick was no match for John Daly, a longshot outsider and the last man in the 73rd PGA Championship. Daly is a 25-year-old rookie on the PGA Tour and the last alternate to make the field for this tournament. More importantly, he's the longest hitter in the tour's recorded history. Daly simply overpowered the longest course ever used for any of golf's major championships in an awesome display that resulted in a 5-under-par 67 Friday and the lead at the tournament halfway point.

He was at 136, eight under par. He was so strong and so long that he used nothing longer than a 7-iron to any of the par-4 holes. After a 322-yard drive, he hit a 6-iron about 3 feet from the cup and made eagle-3 on the 522-yard ninth Athletics beat the California Angels. Dave Stewart (9-6) earned his first victory in four starts and his first road triumph since July 3 at Texas. Red Sox 12, Blue Jays 7 Carlos Quintana drove in four runs with two homers and a pair of singles to pace a 21 -hit attack and Jack Clark reached base six straight times as the Boston Red Sox outslugged the Toronto Blue Jays.

Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston had some harsh words for pitcher David Wells when he took him out of the game in the fifth. Obviously unhappy about giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks over 4 innings, Wells (12-7) tossed the ball into foul territory, then stormed off the mound. Royals 4, Indians 2 Danny Tartabull returned from injury with a double and tie-breaking homer and Mark Gubicza pitched four-hit ball over eight innings, leading Kansas City past Cleveland for the Royals' 10th victory in 12 games. Tartabull, who had missed eight games with a bruised heel, doubled off Greg Swindell (7-10) in his first at-bat since Aug. 2 and snapped a 2-2 tie with his 23rd homer leading off the fourth.

Brian McRae had two singles, stretching his hitting streak to a career-best 18 games and matching Texas' Ruben Sierra for the longest streak in the American League this season. Brewers 10, Rangers 8 Paul Molitor got four hits and an RBI and scored four runs to lead a 16-hit Milwaukee assault on five Texas pitchers as the visiting Brewers tripped the Rangers. four of Chicago's 13 hits as the White Sox won their fifth straight, beating the stumbling Baltimore Orioles 7-4 Friday night. Lance Johnson, Robin Ventura and Carlton Fisk each drove in two runs for the White Sox, who have won 15 of 18 to move a season-high 18 games over .500. Relievers Brian Drahman (2-i) and Melido Perez held the Orioles to one hit over 4Vb innings, and Bobby Thigpen pitched American cago's bullpen has a string of 28 consecutive scoreless innings.

"This is just a carryover from last year," Thigpen said. "Without those guys pitching in front of me, I probably don't get that many opportunities or we might not be winning at all." Twins 5, Mariners 2 David West pitched a five-hitter for eight innings and the Minnesota Twins went ahead with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning en route to a win over the Seattle Mariners. West (3-2) helped hand the Mariners their fourth loss in a row as Seattle's Randy Johnson had a three-game winning streak broken. West struck out three and walked one before getting ninth-inning relief help. Athletics 5, Angels 4 Terry Steinbach drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and Jose Canseco homered as the Oakland Craig Stadler, the former Masters champion who was among Daly's closest pursuers.

Bruce Lietzke, who was tied for the top until he bogeyed the final hole from the water, alone in second at 137. Kenny Knox was next at 138, followed by Stadler, Nick Faldo and the current Masters titleholder, Ian Woosnam, at 139. While Daly is something less than a household name to the casual fan, his reputation for the long ball has spread among his peers. "If we played together, I'd only see him on the first tee," Knox said. "The rest of the time it would be like I was playing by myself.

He'd be that far in front of me. "I'd love to see him go head to head with Woosnam. John Daly might be the only man in the world could intimidate Woosie." Woosnam, perhaps Europe's longest hitter, wanted no part of it. "I've heard a lot about him. 1 hear he's very, very long.

If I'm playing with him, he'd kill me. He'd drive it past me." AP LaserPhoto John Daly reacts to a missed birdie putt on the 17th hole on Friday at the PGA tournament. Capitalizing on his length, he played the four par-5s in 5-under this on a course listed at 7,289 yards and playing much, much longer from overnight rains Lietzke has more personal knowledge of Daly's length.

"I've seen him on the practice tee. He usually gives the man on the range 10 bucks because he hits a lot of balls over the wall," Lietzke said. "I go back to Queens every two or three years and each time I go back it looks less appealing." According to Carro, New York offers "less hospitality than here, too much traffic, too many long lines, and too many environmental concerns." The west is much more to Carro's liking. "It's beautiful out here.

I fell in love with the country," he said. After graduating from Newcastle High School in 1982, Carro stayed in Newcastle and worked for the Diamond Lumber Company until it closed in 1986. In April 1987, Carro moved to Rapid City and found employment in Black Hawk as a building materials salesman for API Inc. During the last two years, Carro has played slowpitch softball for Class LaCrosse. Softball has always been a constant for Carro.

"I've played it pretty much all my life," said Carro, as he recounted games in Queens, Newcastle and Rapid City. "The game was unorganized in Queens," he recalled. "We'd load up into vans and go to another neighborhood and get up a game. I played a lot of softball in the summer, whether it was softball or stickball." Frequently, stickball games took place underneath area bridges. "We would set up a strike zone on a pillar and hit the ball into zones," said Carro.

Zones were allocated for singles, doubles, and triples. "You hit a grounder near the pitcher, we'd call it a out," Carro continued. The pizzaria has since closed and Carro now lives in Rapid City, where he and his LaCrosse Estates teammates are currently awaiting the start of the state men's Class C-D Slow-pitch softball tournament at Rob-binsdale Complex today. At first, the teenage Carro suffered self-described "culture shock" in Newcastle.

Being born and bred in the New York borough of Queens did not prepare him for such sights as expansive ranches, large farms, and 10-gallon Stetsons. But Carro, 27, is to fall to 62-45. Braves 7, Astros 2 Steve Avery won his fifth straight decision and Ron Gant hit his 24th home run, leading the Atlanta Braves past the Houston Astros. Cubs 5, Mets 4 Greg Maddux triggered a three-run rally with a bunt single and won his fourth straight game with a seven-hitter as the Chicago Cubs defeated the New York Mets. Reds 5, Padres 1 Mo Sanford was overpowering in his major-league debut, allowing only two hits and striking out eight in seven innings as the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Diego Padres to end a three-game losing streak.

Dale Murphy struck out, Charlie Hayes singled. When center fielder Dave Martinez fumbled the ball for an error, Kruk reached third and Hayes second. Randy Ready walked to load the bases and Thon then hit a sacrifice fly to left. Reliever Mitch Williams (6-3), who walked in the tying run in the eighth, pitched 1 innings for the victory. For instance, among the local rules for the Elephant Hills Country Club are: If a player is chased by an elephant, "he shall be allowed to return to his ball, which shall be played as it lies whether or not the animal had trodden thereon." If a ball comes to rest within a tail's distance of a sleeping buffalo, "it may be removed and dropped no nearer the hole without penalty. More than a tail length, the ball shall be played as it lies." If a ball hits a running warthog, "this does not entitle the player to replay the shot, except when the ball strikes the tail, in which case it shall be deemed to have struck a miniature moving flagpole." Zimbabwe pro Nick Price once hit a shot off a warthog's rump and said later that "it saved me a stroke or two because he kept the ball from going out of bounds."
