Warren Air Force Base at Cheyenne, has been designated a national historic site by the National Park Service. According to Sen. Cliff Hansen, the designation follows months of work by the Wyoming Recreation Commission and the Wyoming Archives and Historical Department. Hansen said the Air Force had ordered a halt to further demolition of base buildings in August while the Strategic Air Command made a study to determine the cost of maintaining the facilities. Warren AFB is headquarters for maintenance men connected with the Minuteman missile complex.

It was originally tablished as a frontier cavalry post in 1867 and was previously named Ft. D. A. Russell. Hansen said "The Wyoming State Archives and Historical Department has prepared a detailed plan outlining the significance of buildings on the base.

It also has proposed a program intended to be a guide for developing a maintenance and preservation program. In a letter last August to Undersecretary of the Air Force John McLucas, Hansen requested that all disposal efforts be stopped and asked that the Air Force budget funds for maintenance of historic properties. McLucas told Hansen that demolition work on base buildings would be suspended, but noted that the Air Force doesn't have funds for maintaining historic facilities.
