After Jim's parents divorced, he moved with his mother and sister to Lincoln, Neb.

Jim attended high school in Lincoln. During the years he lived in Nebraska, Jim spent parts of his summer vacations in Newcastle at his father's home. After graduation from high school, he attended the University of Nebraska for two years where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. Jim transferred to the University of Wyoming and received his degree in journalism in 1955. Jim attended college under the ROTC program and was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation.

On Sept. 15, 1956, he married Ardys Winans of Highmore, S.D. Jim and Ardys are the parents of five children: Tierny, Scott, Rick, Karen and David. After serving six months active duty with the U.S. Army, Jim remained with the service on active reserve and returned to Newcastle.
