"Fritz" McGarry born June 14, 1924. Willie lived most of his life in Jackson County, nine decades of change. His life spanned 17 U.S. KADOKA William J. "Willie" McGarry was born to William 1909, in Platte.

Margaret Mary Edmund Michael and witnessed presidents, William Howard Taft to George W. Bush, and he lived through two World Wars and then some. During the Great Depression, he worked on the Works Progress Administration under Roosevelt's New Deal Program, building roads and dams in order to feed his mother and siblings and keep the family farm. He never lived a life of riches and made countless personal sacrifices for his family. He farmed for decades at Route 1, Box 3, Belvidere, and kept his cattle until a year ago and his farm up through his final days.

Due to complications with his health, he moved from the farm and spent the last five years living in Kadoka, at Gateway Apartments. Yet, Willie loved nothing better than the active, outdoor life on the prairie and looked forward to spending time with his cattle and other animals (except for the prairie dogs) that inhabited his farmland. It was common sight to see him walking around the farm, always in bib overalls and a flannel shirt, work boots and a cap. Surviving are his two nieces, Cheryl McGarry of Seabeck, and Paula Rebar of Washington, D.C. As young kids, they spent summers with thetr grandmother and Willie on the farm, and have many fond memories of him.

One summer, he surprised them with ponies, and in many respects, they were the children he never had. After high school graduation in 1937, Janet started work as a secretary at Farm Security Administration. In 1939, Janet moved to Bakersfield, where she worked as a Doctors Assistant. It was a great educational experience for her and she loved it! In 1941, once WWII started, at the request of her parents, Janet moved back to Bismarck. On Oct. 1, 1945, Janet married James F.

Weekes in McIntosh, and lived in the Lazy JW ranch for 25 years. They raised cattle and quarter horses and traveled for several years putting on rodeos with their stock. Carole Carol Ann Nobody sells more real estate then 1240 Jackson Rapid City, SD 57701 341-4300 Rancher challenges IRS gift-tax notice Ferman Clarkson of Lead has filed a petition challenging a ruling by the Internal Revenue Service that his gifts were taxable.

SIOUX FALLS (AP) A South Dakota rancher and oilman has filled a petition asking the U.S. Tax Court to overturn an Internal Revenue Service notice ordering him to pay $2.34 million in gift taxes. Ferman L. Clarkson, 87, of Lead, said the IRS overestimated the amount of his gifts to a family-owned partnership. Besides owning a ranch in Butte County, Clarkson also owns a number of oil wells in Harding County.

Clarkson's daughter, Mary Buchholz of Belle Fourche, said her father made the gifts as part of his estate planning for the benefit of his four children and 21 grandchildren. An IRS spokesman said the agency was barred by law from commenting on the case. Clarkson contends the IRS erroneously determined that the transfer of assets to the F.L. Clarkson Limited Partnership amounted to taxable gifts. Each family-member partner received a 1.14 percent share of the total in the gifts, the IRS decided.

Clarkson's petition also challenges an IRS alternative inding that the partnership was a trust rather than an operating business. A person is allowed to give as much as $10,000 a year to family members before taxes start accumulating. The IRS says Clarkson's transfers to the partnership were "in substance an indirect gift" subject to tax. If Clarkson and the IRS fail to negotiate a settlement, the case could go to trial before a tax court judge.
