Salt makes an egg taste more like an egg; it makes a carrot taste more like a carrot.

But when salt so dominates a dish that we become conscious of it, then it detracts. It is the same with persons who are "the salt of the earth." They do not call attention to themselves. They do not dominate, but rather help others to be more truly and richly themselves. They make companionship enjoyable, keep the milk of human kindness flowing, put flavor and zest into life around them.e BEHRENS WILSON FUNERAL HOME 6 CREMATORY SINCE 1879 632 St. Francis Rapid City 343-0145 LOCALLY FAMILY OWNED OPERATED Trust the best.

BIRTHDAY MEMORIAL SERVICE 12:00 Noon Monday, January 15, 2007 Faith Temple Church 715 Kansas City Street Rapid City Leader: Feds tell differing wolf stories The Associated Press Gould CHEYENNE, Wyo. Federal officials told newspapers one thing and state officials another about the minimum number of wolves that Wyoming will eventually be expected to support, Gov. Dave Freudenthal told the Wyoming Press Association. "We're a long way from knowing what the current status of the federal minimum target is," he said Friday at a luncheon for newspaper representatives and people who work with the media. U.S.

Fish and Wildlife Service officials say they are close to submitting a plan for how wolves could be managed in the state after their removal from endangeredspecies protection. But Freudenthal has been displeased by differing things he has heard and read. "One of the requests we made was, 'Tell us who can speak on behalf of the Department of We have to receive that notification," he said. "But everybody is speaking on behalf of the Department of Interior in newspapers. And what they're saying in the newspapers is different than what they said in the meeting with us." He said Interior officials said in a meeting with state lawmakers and Sen.

Mike Enzi. that they would accept a minimum of 10 breeding pairs of wolves in the state. "I read in the paper the other day that now they're saying. we meant 15 breeding pairs." Freudenthal said. "Sort of.

'Oops, we're "Well. I've been down this road with them three times. I mean, I can negotiate with the devil himself. and I've got to know what his position is, and I've got to know who speaks for him." he said. "And at this stage.

Rose said that Mitch King, the regional director for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Denver, would have returned the call but was out of town.

She said King has been in touch with the state on the issue. "We're certainly working with the state of Wyoming to help clear up this confusion. and we will continue to do that," she said. She said 15 breeding pairs is the Fish and Wildlife proposed minimum. A breeding pair, she said, is an adult male and an adult female traveling with two pups in December.

King said Thursday that he expected his agency to submit a formal wolf proposal to Wyoming in time for the Legislature to act before adjourning. Wyoming has a lawsuit pending in federal court over the federal government's rejection of a state plan for removing wolves from endangeredspecies protection. Reporters also asked Freudenthal about other issues. He cast doubt on the prospect of the Legislature buying back federal mineral leases to prevent oil and gas drilling in the Wyoming Range. Freudenthal said that appropriating more lump sums into the state Permanent Mineral Trust Fund would be fine if Wyoming didn't have so many needs.

Freudenthal has opposed federal leases that could open gas and oil drilling in western Wyoming's Wyoming Range. But he doubted that the Legislature would be willing to buy back the federal leases so that they can't be developed. "I can't even find legislative enthusiasm for a resolution opposing leasing." he said. Marie Hanson LITTLE EAGLE Marie Hanson. 77.
