District Meeting Will Be At Elbow Room In Crawford Players Are Assigned To the Various Teams At Meeting Rams Lose Championship to Rushville In the final game of the football season the Crawford Rams were de feated by the Rushville Longhorns 47-0 on the Rams home field Friday night November 15th This win gave Rushville the Northwest Nebraska Conference Championship During the game the Longhorns were on the offensive almost constantly with the Crawford eleven having control of the ball only bn tho kickoffs and when the opponents lost the ball on downs This tilt was the final one for seven seniors: Eddie Banko Dean Bass Jim Bunch Don Norman Beebe Porter Keith Race and Pooch Roper Bob Rankin another senior had been rushed to the hospital just the Wednesday before the game for an em- ergency appendectomy i The Northwestern Nebraska end southwestern South Dakota sheepmen will convene at the Elbow Room at Crawford November 26th for their-District meeting Curtis Severson field service di rector of the Co-operative Wool Grow ors Association of South Dakota will be in charge of the meeting which wiU open at 1:45 Growers wll discuss the present wool situation and how the price of wool is determined and will witnese a demonstration of the new wool-coring machine The demonstration will be tho first of its kind in this area Lecture Sponsored By Club Miss Mary A Dingman will come to Crawford Tuesday November 26 under the auspices of the Crawford Club She will lecture on "International at the High School Auditorium at 7:30 Miss Dingman lived abroad for 22 years and since returning to the United States in 1939 she has traveled in many parts of this country on lec ture tours and has just recently returned from a lecture tour in Ireland She speaks authoritatively on many European countries as well as the Near East Far East India and South America since her travels have taken her to forty-six countries in the vari ous'eontinents of the world In China from 19(23 to 1925 she served with Madame Chiang KaiiShek on the Child Iabor Commission to investigate conditions and recommend reforms in this field She has worked with the League of Nations and in 1938 she went to India as a specially invited guest to the All-India Conference held in Delhi She is Field Representative for the Action Committee for Lasting Peace and will be accompanied by Mrs Euell Edmondson of Bingham Nebraska who is State Chairman for that Committee Miss Dingman and Mrs Edmondson will be entertained by the officers end department heads of the Club at dinner at the home of Mrs James Soester before her lecture The public is cordially invited to hear this hoted speaker MrsH Stoneking Dies in Wyoming This community was saddened on Tuesday to learn of the death of Mrs Stoneking one of Dawes earliest settlers which occurred at the hospital at Wheatland Wyoming November 19th 1946 after several weeks illness aged 85 years 3 months and 18 daya Hattie Ritter daughter of Jacob Ritter and Sarah Hammond Ritter was born at Lowell Indiana July 81 1861 where she grew to womanhood Later the family moved to Chariton Iowa In 1882 she was united in nrjarri-age to Hiram Stoneking of ChaT iton Iowa To this union eight children were bom In 1884 Mr and Mrs Stoneking pioneered farther west coming to Dawes County Nebraska to Camp Robinson now Fort Robinson where Mr Stoneking was engaged in freight ing from Valentine to Fort Robinson ns this was before the railroad had reached this part of Nebraska and before Crawford 'was even a camp site The family remained in this vicinity enduring the hardships of the early pioneers until 1899 when they moved to Guernsey Wyoming to en gage in ranching nnd stockraising In 1919 Mr and Mrs Stoneking re turned to Crawford to make their home where she resided until 1942 when she went to Guernsey Wyoming to be with fcer sons Mr Stone-king having passed away on June 4th 1941 Mrs Stoneking was not only a devoted wife and mother but was always willing and ready to lend a help ing hand to those in need And was never too busy to help with the sick in the early days when medical aid was scarce She was active in church and social circles and was a great favorite with those who knew her She will be greatly missed by relatives and friend She leaves to mourn her departure four daughters Mrs Edith Graven of California: Mrs Ida Craven of Kansas Citv Edna Groh of Chicago 111 and Elsie Perirro of Florida four sons Edward of Portland Oregon and Elmer John and Earl of Guernsey Wvoming a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren many other relatives and a host of friends Funeral service were held at Guem sey Tuesday morning and the body was brought to Crawford for burial in the cemetery by the side of her husband Short services were conducted by Rev Bratt of the Methodist church at the grave He read the following telegram from her daughter Elsie from Florida: are treasures no one can Bteal Death is a heartache nothing can heal Some may forget while you are gone But I shall remember no matter how Mrs Iris Higby Receives Bronze Star The Bronze Star Medal awarded posthumously to Lientenant Colonel Harlo Higby has been received by his Widow Mrs Iris Wells Higby of Crawford Nebraska The medal was awarded for meritorious achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy from 1 January to (J February 1945 in the European Theater of Op orations Colonel Higby by his aggres sive and determined actions professional knowledge and devotion to duty contributed much to the successful mission of reinforcing the fires of operations of his organization in its mission of reinforcing the fires of three divisions Despite the constant displacements necessitated as the attack developed the handicaps of bad weather an3 inadequate road net and poor position areas Colonel organizing ability enabled his group to render constant supporting fire of great effectiveness His personal cour age and expert leadership were in the finest traditions of the Armed Forces While still a student at the univer sity of West Virginia Col Higby was called into service in 1916 as a member of the West Virginia National Guard When he entered World War I he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant from Fort Sill Oklahoma At the close of the war he established his residence in Pittsburgh Pa and joined the ranks of the 107th Field Artillery He received many trophies and commendations during his years of service with this organization and held the rank of Major at the time of his induction into active service on February 16 1941 When the 422nd A Group was activated at Camp Bowie Texas August 1942 under the command of Colonel Frank Mellon Colonel Higby was made Executive Officer of the group Later this organization trained at Fort Sill where they were joined by other units They also were in training at Camp Howze Texas They went overseas in July 1944 where they served with the First Third and Ninth Armies On New day 1946 Colonel Clark then Commanding officer of the 422nd A Group sufferefl a fatal heart attack Col Higby was given command and was still acting in this capacity at the time of his death On 7 March while flying on reconnaissance over the Rhine near Cologne he was accidently killed by allied artillery fire He was buried near Maastricht Belgium with Protestant rites He was a member of A A of Pittsburgh Pa and a member of the Consistory and Shrine of Oklahoma City Okla Besides his wife surviving kin include his parents a son Don one daughter Mrs June DeWan of Pittsburgh and a brother Frank of Meadville Pa At the Volley Ball meeting Tuesday night team's 'were reshuffled and rules discussed so the League play could get underway The Teets Electric and New Vork Life teams have withdrawn so the 4ason will start with seven teams from Crawford and one from Fort Robinson Quite a few players were transferred to other teams so as make them more equally divided Hoffman Chevrolet drew three new men so now they will have a team on the floor Three sets will be played nightly and the auditorium will be opened so all interested may attend Please use the Anthony Valaika of Plymouth Penn They were mar ried on November 3rd in the Lutheran church in Flushing New York The bride was given in marriage by an old family friends Mr Fred Muntz The church was beautifully decorated with baskets of white chrysanthemums The ceremony was performed by Rev Kraft The bride wore a suite of golden brown and carried white gardenias The suit was light blue and she carried Talisman roses Following the ceremony the wedding party and guests were invited to the home of Mr and Mrs Robert Estler of Flushing where a reception was held The guests were received by the newly wedded couple under a lovely white wedding bell tied with white streamers to the four comeers of the living room which was profuse ly decorated with flowers A buffet lunch was served in the long dining room The table centered with a three-tiered wedding cake was loaded with roast turkey baked ham delicious salads and delicacies of all kinds After spending a few days in New York the newly-weds left for Pennsylvania' the home of the groom Mr and Mrs Valaika will have an apartment in the home of Mr and Mrs Fred Muntz in New York Junior Class Play Will Be December 3rd Ten Juniors of the Crawford high school mnke up the east of the Junior class play Comes which will be given at the high school auditorium on Tuesday December 3 at 8:00 The play is a comedy in three acts Nora Malone played hv Flyelyn Norman has the first and last word so she says You blame her When some crashes an airspane into house enough to mnke anyone say a word or two especially when he wrecks the house rnd the plane too but not himself He just climbs out of the wreckage and strolls away as if the matter didn't concern him Things start early and last late: Romance! MeKinstrav Dies in Wyoming The many friends of Ray McKin-stray were saddened to learn of his death November 13th 1946 at Jack-son Wvoming from injuries received when he fell from a horse on November 11th Mr McKinstray was a barber in this city for many years before going to Wyoming to reside He was well and favorably known in this vicinity Funeral services were held at Jackson on Friday and his daughter Norma of thiB city left Thursday to attend the services Joan Forbes CMron Football Queen Joan Forbes daughter of Mrs Mvr tic Forbes was crowned football aueen at activities preceding the Chadron High-Gering game at Elliott Field Frldav afternoon In Chadron Victor Millegan senior and regular fullback on the Chadron high team crowned the aueen He was named honorary captain of the squad at an election Thursday The queen was presented a bououet of white chrysanthemums and reign ed over her court on the 50-yard line during the game Miss Forbes Junior class president is a cheerleader and a member of the Pep club and the Chadron High Chorus Stanek-Richey Miss Irene Stanek daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Stanek of Harrison became the bride of Corporal Myron Richey Friday November 1 1946 at Hot Springs Dak The bride wore a gold colored suit with black accessories Mrs Richey came to Harrison with her parents when a baby and was educated in the schools of our city She was graduated from the Sioux Coun ty high school with the class of 1941 Since graduation she has been in the employ of the Sioux National Bank as bookkeeper The groom has been in the service of his country for the past two years and for the past eight months has been stationed at Fort Robinson They are residing in Crawford where they have an apartment and Mrs Richey is commuting to her em ployment here with Mr Ivins Harri son Sun Mrs Henry Gamier Passes Away Mrs Henry Gamier passed away at the home of her parents in Crawford November 16th 1946 at 4:00 a aged 41 years and 5 days Julia Sears was bom November 11 1905 at Martin South Dakota where she lived until February 14th 1925 at which time she was united in mar riage to Henry Gamier They made their home in South Dakota until two years ago when they moved to Crawford to make their home She leaves to mourn her departure her husband five daughters Gladys Sarah Eleanor Lorene and Evelyn five sons John Herman Henry Oli ver and Harold One son and her parents preceded her in death Funeral services were conducted by Rev and Mrs Leo Thomas pastors of the Open Bible Standard Church at the Gamier home The body was taken to Pine Ridge for burial The Alpha Omicrom Ohaptor of the Beta Sigma' Phi held formal initiation last Wodnesdav evening at the home of Mrs Ruth Phillips The vows were given as Mrs Edith Hall the president read the rituals to the twelve pledges in the official candlelight service The new Chapter is under a si months probation and is eagerly wait ing for May at which time they will receive their charter In the cultural program Invitation and Introductions were the main topics of the Round Table discussion of the evening The young ladies are showing an unusual amount of enthusiasm In wardroblng the Magic Skin doll which they plan to display early In December in the window of the Na-tionail Farm Loan Office American 1-evion Auxiliary Notes About 150 attended the American Legion nnd Auxiliary dinner Armls ties Dnv at the Park Pavilion Mrs John Dillon and Sue Bruer and Nancy Wellington and Irma Buckingham en tertained the group with vocal duets accompanied on the piano by Mrs Bruer Mr Bartholme and Mrs Dillon rendered several piano duets and played for the group singing The regular Auxiliary meeting and initiation of new members will be held Monday November 26th at the Legion Home All members both old and new are urged to be present Mrs Elizabeth McFarland Passes Away Word was received in this city of the death of Mrs Elizabeth Cottom-McFarland at her home in Hollywood California the latter part of October Mrs McFarland spent her girlhood on a farm in the Little Cottonwood valley northwest of Crawford She was married to Edward McFarland and to this union three sons and a daughter were horn She served as postmistress at Fort Robinson for a number of years About twelve years ago the family moved to California to make their home Her husband preceded her in death White Rvor Club Meeting On November 16th the BBB 4-H Club held a meeting Fourteen calves were weighed with team chosen to see who could guess the weight the best The winning team received a box of candy from Mr Renfro At that time the club members presented their leader Carl Nowlnn with a gift in appreciation for bis help during tho past year The calves were weighed on Charles scales Standing of Volley Ball Teams The standing of Volley Ball team Nelson To Head Culbertson Schools Culbertson Nebr Delbert Nelson principal of the local school has been named superintendent to succeed Le-Roy Ortgieson who resigned effective December 1 to accept a position on the staff of the State Education Department Mr Ortgieson will be one of three state supervisors of secondary and elementary education Mr Nelson was an Army officer from December Millie Benuty Shop in this city and plan to open it for business in the present location In the I on December 2nd Miss Lucas is a daughter of Mr and Mrs Lucas of this city and after graduating from the Crawford high school took a beauty course She i an experienced operator and no doubt will enjoy a good patronage Geome Dorrimr-ton Passes Away George Dorringfon passed away Tuesday afternoon November 19th 1940 at 6:30 following several month Illness at Ms home fa this city Funeral service will be held tht FrirfHv morning the Houston Funeral Home conducted by Rev Eddy! Newland Complaints Made About BBGnns Numerous complaints have been re ceived bv the Crawford police depart ment about children' shooting BB guns in the city limits and doing damage The department wishes to warn parents that it is illegal for children to shoot In the city limits and are asking their co-operation in order to save trouble The Church of the Nazarene welcomes you to its Sunday School at 10:00 A education is incomplete without knowledge of the Bible Mr and Mrs Rex Hagemeister and two daughters spent the week end in Lisco.
